GENERAL MEETING JANUARY 8 and YOU’RE INVITED!

The Santa Cruz Chapter General Meeting will be Tuesday, January 8 at 7:00 p.m. in the O’Neill Sea Odyssey Training Room at the Santa Cruz Small Craft Harbor. That’s 2222 East Cliff Drive, in the O’Neill Building, on the beach and upstairs adjacent the Surfrider office and lab.

PLEASE, JOIN US FOR THIS LIVELY MEETING! WE’RE FOCUSING ON THE INCREASING AMOUNT OF USED DRUG SYRINGES AND OTHER HUMAN TRASH LEFT ON PUBLIC BEACHES, PUBLIC PARK AREAS, AND ALONG THE RAILROAD TRACKS. THIS ISSUE HAS BECOME A HOT ITEM IN SANTA CRUZ AND WE’D LIKE TO STIMULATE THE DISCUSSION AND GET SOME SOLID ACTIONS IN PLACE TO CONTROL THE PROBLEM. AS OF THIS WRITING, WE’RE STILL TACKING TOGETHER THE EVENT, BUT IF YOU WANT TO SPEAK OUT, GET IN TOUCH.

WE ARE EXPECTING TO HAVE DAVID TERRAZAS,CITY OF SANTA CRUZ CITY COUNCIL, AS A GUEST AND KEN “SKINDOG” COLLINS, SANTA CRUZ BIG WAVE CHARGER, SURFING AMBASSADOR FOR THE SANTA CRUZ WORLD SURFING RESERVE, AND COMMUNITY ACTIVIST

SURFRIDER HAS ATTENDED PUBLIC MEETINGS ON THIS SUBJECT, AND WE HAVE ALSO WRITTEN A LETTER TO THE CITY’S SAFETY COMMISSION URGING PUBLIC ACTION AND ADVOCATING FOR A COMMUNITY RESPONSE.
THE SANTA CRUZ WORLD SURFING RESERVE HAS ALSO COMMENTED, POSTING A LETTER TO SANTA CRUZ CITY COUNCIL EXPRESSING STRONG CONCERNS AND ADVOCATING FOR A COMMUNITY SOLUTION.

INCREASED INTEREST IN THIS ISSUE MAKES US CONFIDENT THAT A LASTING COMMUNITY SOLUTION WILL SOON BE ESTABLISHED. WE THANK EVERYONE FOR THEIR INTEREST IN THIS MATTER AND FOR THEIR DESIRE TO CLEAN IT UP AND DISCOURAGE REPETITION. SEVERAL COMMUNITY GROUPS HAVE FORMED OR ARE FORMING TO CLEANUP VARIOUS “HOT SPOTS” AROUND THE CITY, SO WE ARE CONFIDENT THAT A MORE PERMANENT APPROACH TO THIS ISSUE CAN BE ARRANGED.

The MERMEN play MOE’S ALLEY in a SURFRIDER, SANTA CRUZ BENEFIT!

THE MERMEN COME ASHORE at MOE’S ALLEY
CATCH THE SHOW!

And in a very cool December Feature, catch THE MERMEN at MOE’S ALLEY on Friday, December 14 FOR A “VERY MERMAN XMAS”. Here’s a surf band that sounds like….well….nobody else! No, we’re not kiddin’. If you don’t have a MERMAN CD in your collection..well, you really haven’t heard NOR-CAL surf music! And this is a Santa Cruz Chapter benefit show, too! Have fun and help your local Surfrider chapter at the same time! Stop by the Surfrider table and say “Hi!”

“The best rock and roll is poetry in motion, with or without words — and some of the best records of the year came without. The Mermen play an extreme brand of surf music; the trebly turbulent and black minor chord moods of guitarist Jim Thomas are like a rough ride on the icy seas of the mid-Atlantic. Hints of Dick Dale filter through the cracked sidewalk wave forms of Sonic Youth. Thomas sounds more like Neil Young at the wheel of the good ship Crazy Horse.” –David Fricke, Rolling Stone

ABOUT DICK DALE

Dick Dale invented surf music in the 1950′s. Not the ’60′s as is commonly believed. He was given the title “King of the Surf Guitar” by his fellow surfers with whom he surfed with from sun-up to sun-down. He met Leo Fender the guitar and amplifier Guru and Leo asked Dale to play his newly creation, the Fender Stratocaster Electric Guitar. The minute Dale picked up the guitar, Leo Fender broke into uncontrolled laughter and disbelief, he was watching Dale play a right handed guitar upside down and backwards, Dale was playing a right handeguitar left handed and changing the chords in his head then transposing the chords to his hands to create a sound never heard before.

Vote YES on Measure P-update-YES with 71% approval!!!!!!!!!

Measure P passed with an overwhelming 71% approval.   Good job you guys and the coalition members for pulling this off!   That means we’ll be back at the polls if a proposal is put forward to build the plant.

Santa Cruz city residents-Ensure your right to vote on the proposed desal plant.  A yes vote on Measure P would ensure voter approval before the city could approve a desalinization project.  Desal can have some major impacts on marine life and construction of the proposed project could affect our coastlines.  Since we don’t know how the project will play out ensure your right to vote on this when we get all the final information.
