Capitola is situated just south of 41st Ave and The Hook surf spot to New Brighton State Beach. Access to the surf includes The Hook stairway, Privates stairway, Hoopers stairway near the tree and Capitola beach at the esplanade. There is the Capitola Pier situated next to the Soquel Creek. Soquel Creek, at times, is highly polluted with both bird and other fecal bacteria.
There are a series of seawalls extending from below Sharks Cove, south of The Hook, through Hoopers with houses directly above with, in some cases, unstable cliff edges.
Capitola Beach has a jetty to trap sand for the main beach.
Depot Hill, south of the main beach at Capitola is a 90' vertical cliff that has eroded close to many of the houses. A road has been closed at the cliffs edge because of the erosion. Some developement has already been removed at risk of falling into the ocean. At the time of this writing, there are plans to install two seawalls including a 1200' fixed seawall in front of the tall cliff to protect the Depot Hill cliff edge houses.
