On Sept. 27, 2007 the City of Capitola joined an estimated 100 cities throughout the country, including Berkeley and Oakland, in regulating polystyrene foam food service ware (Capitola Policy). The polystyrene manufacturing process is the fifth largest producer of hazardous waste in the United States, and the second worst environmental offender in California. This ordinance prohibits the use of polystyrene plastics. Surfrider Santa Cruz and its members was a huge influence on getting this passed!

Many Capitola businesses have already successfully eliminated most polystyrene and non-biodegradable packaging from their business operations.

The City of Capitola can not "police" business to see if they have switched so it's up us to report them. If you find a business that is still using polystyrene you can file a complaint against a food service ware vendor. Here's the form you can fill out and send to The City of Capitola:
