Beach Cleanup with Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity of San Jose State University on April 27th from 11-2 at Seabright

The “Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity of San Jose State University” were re-founded at SJSU in 2002. For the past 5 years, they have been awarded Raymond L. Orians Excellence Award by their Nationals. This award is given only to the top 10% of Pi Kappa Alpha (also known as PIKE) chapters internationally. Qualifications for these awards include philanthropy dollars raised, improved GPA, top recruitment on campus, community service hours, etc. Recently they have also participated in “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” to raise awareness for domestic violence and rape, in which they were  featured on NBC Nightly News due to their support. They take pride in giving back to the community. ‘That’s why we look forward to these kinds of opportunities where we can go into a local community and clean their beach; its a situation where the results can be seen immediately and enjoyed by all.”-John Sepassi-Member.
Thank you, John and we look forward to your participation, openness to work with and include the community and look forward to working with you this Friday!

May and July Locations of the Beach Clean-up Switched in Effort to Team with Cabrillo College & The Clean Oceans Project

Our May Beach Cleanup will be moved to Moran Lake at the same time:11am- 1 pm and will team up to work together with The Cabrillo College Oceanography Class 28th Bi-Annual Coastal Cleanup and The Clean Oceans Project Beach Survey.

Cabrillo Oceanography Coastal Cleanup

Cabrillo College Oceanography department will be hosting their 28th Bi-Annual Corcoran Lagoon and Coastal Cleanup on Saturday, May 5th from 9:00am – 1:00pm Meet at the KSCO Radio Station at 2300 Portola Drive. They will have breakfast and lunch for all participants and will provide gloves and bags, and hopefully live music. Please spread the word to Surfrider and others!

They like to call it a “coastal cleanup” because some of their focus is in waterways and other areas that lead to the beach. If the weather is nice, they hope to get ~100 participants or more. They’ve averaged around 1,000lbs per cleanup so they estimate they’ve removed at least 13 tons over the last 14 years.

The Clean Oceans Project Beach Survey

will be conducted at Moran Lake Beach around 9:30 am after a quick briefing from the head of the Cabrillo College and TCOP crew at the KSCO Radio Station from about 9-9:30. This will include 5+ Members of the TCOP group instructing a beach cleanup survey to a few members of the Cabrillo College Oceanography Group ( and anyone else interested) in which a smaller area of the beach is surveyed and the amount of trash there in is tallied to estimate the amount of trash that would be on the beach in total and for use by comparison to other beaches!

Also come to learn about the new, fun beach cleanup tool – The Marine Debris Tracker at the 9 am briefing! A free, downloadable APP, downloadable at  http://www.marinedebris.engr.uga.edu/how-do-i-start-tracking. Go to the website to also find out more!
