POLLUTION
PREVENTION IS PATRIOTIC!:
Pollution Prevention/Trash Bag Handout:
When: Saturday, July 4th 12:00pm -
5:00pm
Where: Seabright State Beach
Beach Cleanup:
When: Sunday, July 5th 7:00am -
11:00am
Where: Seabright State Beach
So, we all know how July 4th goes in Santa Cruz, and for
the 3rd year in a row WE'RE GONNA HELP YOU KEEP
YOUR BEACH PARTY CLEAN at SEABRIGHT STATE BEACH!
Yep, we're gonna 'WALK TH' TALK"
and pass-out free trash bags to folks entering the beach
on the afternoon of July 4th. The idea is that YOU
TAKE A TRASH BAG WITH YOU WHEN YOU HIT THE BEACH AND USE
IT TO BAG YOUR BEACH-PARTY TRASH, unstead of leaving
it around to blow into the ocean...Hey, this is just basic
personal responsibility, and you really should always pack
your own trash out, but WE'RE TRYING TO MAKE IT
EASY FOR YOU!
Look for chapter vols as you enter Seabright sometime between
12 noon and 5 p.m. Better still, if you want to help distribute
bags, please contact us by email.
And as you might expect, WE'LL BE BACK AT SEABRIGHT
THE NEXT DAY, Sunday, July 5th, TO PROWL THE SANDS FOR WHATEVER'S
STILL OUT THERE. We figure the morning high tide
at around 11 a.m. so we want to be on the beach early to
pick up the leftover trash, recycles, and fireworks parts
or whatever before they drift into the coastal waters.
WE FIGURE IT'S PATRIOTIC
TO KEEP OUR TRASH OUT OF OUR BAY C'mon down
to SEABRIGHT and help us out!
If you would like
to participate in either or both of these events all you
need to do is register and show up at Seabright:

FOAM
BAN IN WATSONVILLE?
In other foam-related developments, on March 10 we posted
a formal chapter letter to the City of Watsonville City Council
encouraging them to have city staff draft an ordinance banning
the use of polystyrene food take-out containers in the city.
Watsonville was the only jurisdiction in Santa Cruz County
which didn't have such a local ordinance on the books. Now,
we CAN'T tell Watsonville what to do, nor do we WANT TO....BUT
we know trash and litter in our waterways and the Marine Sanctuary
is a regional issue, for sure, and we KNOW IT'D BE
BEST for ALL JURISDICTIONS along
the Sanctuary to adopt similar policies around this issue.
We think like this: As residents of this coast, we realize
we all have a common stake in preserving a healthy marine
environment. We understand that this is critical to the employment
and recreational enjoyment of huge numbers of local residents,
whether surfers, boaters, fishers, divers, researchers, sailors,
workers in the tourist trades, or businesses which depend
on a healthy economy to thrive. Monterey Bay is our collective
back-yard, and we need to do everything we can to protect
and preserve it.
